Work Experience:

Staff Reporter, The Hour, January 2007 - August 2008
As a general assignment reporter for daily and weekly newspapers in Norwalk and Wilton, Conn., I generated story ideas through regular contact with residents, business owners and public officials. I met early and late deadlines every day and posted breaking news to the newspapers' Web sites. While fulfilling daily story obligations, I developed deeper stories for the weekend papers and spent months writing longer enterprise articles.
  • Beats included politics, transportation, city government and courts
  • Served a committee to expand the newspapers' multimedia offerings, and recorded and edited audio for the Web
  • Averaged ten stories per week, written in AP style

Education:
M.A., Journalism, New York University, December 2006
Basic beat reporting and feature writing classes aside, I studied investigative reporting and spent an entire semester examining the environmental problems in a Bronx neighborhood. Other courses explored the Internet's impact on the news media and ethical issues such as bias in the newsroom and pressure from advertisers and publishers.
  • Interned at Newsweek International, The Jewish Week and the arts section of the New York Sun.
B.F.A., Performing Arts and Technology, University of Michigan, April 2001
The program emphasized computers and technology as a way to integrate music into film, art and video games. While not directly related to journalism, my expertise in recording and editing sound and video will come in handy as more newspapers offer content in these forms.

Freelance work:
While employed at The Hour, I spent evening and weekend hours writing about video games.
  • For Wired Magazine, work included two video game reviews and an article on an "indie" video game distributor with a radical bent
  • Wrote essays and reported stories for The Escapist, a "high brow" online video game magazine. Topics included "anti-advergames" and the movement to bring gaming into libraries.
  • Maintains a blog on video games. Features include the Random Game Idea, game reviews and critiques of video game journalism

Related Skills:
  • Comfortable with PC and Mac
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office
  • Skilled in web design with knowledge of HTML, PHP and style sheets
  • Familiar with QuarkXPress and Adobe InDesign
